Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as '100%' Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, addressed the persistent rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments come after he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread talk of a potential disagreement between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, potentially in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter publicly, there has also been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these media briefings has become increasingly strained, raising fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent start to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable Champions League draw with strong results in their remaining matches.
The lingering question is whether this off-field dynamic might eventually affect a team that was just starting to appear cohesive.
