Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.

This event follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.
