Iran Says It May Rejoin US Nuclear Discussions if Approached with 'Dignity' and 'Honor'

Iran is willing to resume nuclear talks with the United States as long as it is handled with "dignity" and "honor", Iran's top diplomat has stated.

Abbas Araghchi stated solely negotiations produced results, and shared recent overtures had come from intermediaries to restart negotiations with the Trump administration. He said Iran had zero secret atomic facilities, and Tehran had not yet reached a point to permit the International Atomic Energy Agency to access struck enrichment centers for protective measures.

Navigating a Complex Course

The foreign minister is navigating a challenging path since Iran wishes not to be seen to be operating from a position of disadvantage, and he consistently maintained that Iran had come out more powerful in military terms and mentally from the Israeli-US attack on its atomic facilities in June.

He was speaking at a defense forum in Tehran where he reiterated that Iran had "an inalienable right to enrich uranium within its borders that it will never give up" – the primary cause of the impasse in the previous talks.

Earlier Talks Abruptly Concluded

The earlier sessions of talks between the US and Iran were concluded unexpectedly and acrimonious conclusion on 12 June when Israel, with US support, targeted Tehran's atomic facilities in a two-week conflict that concluded with Donald Trump asserting the facilities had been eliminated. Afterward, European countries exercised their privilege to reimpose UN-wide sanctions, but Iran asserts they have not had a major impact.

Magic Solution Proposed

Iran's diplomats said they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the uranium processing matter in earlier negotiations, when it was settled an Iran-based consortium with American involvement could enrich uranium. The two nations would have been able to claim victory since domestic enrichment would have continued and the US could be certain that Iran's atomic project was exclusively peaceful.

It had not been agreed in the negotiations that US nuclear scientists could function within Iranian territory, but that was a natural consequence of the consortium proposal. Representatives stated on multiple occasions they had secured an understanding with the US representative Steve Witkoff only for the agreement to collapse due to "detractors in America".

Present Position

Iran's diplomats declared the consortium offer was now withdrawn, but it seems highly likely the offer could be resurrected in some form if negotiations reopen.

Trump last week stated he had been receiving messages that Iran desired to reopen negotiations, but confidentially Iran's diplomats state they are not yet obtaining consistent overtures from the United States either straightforwardly or from important Middle Eastern intermediaries, such as the Qatari government, the Egyptian leadership, the Omani authorities and the Saudi kingdom. The Tehran's diplomatic corps has been accused of inactivity in the face of the US president's straightforward manner, but Tehran asserts negotiations is not part of a spectacle.

Political Stance

In his speech to the conference, designed to portray the US as a hegemonic power that exploits the idea of international law, the foreign minister said the fortnight-long engagement demonstrated the conflict could not be settled by combat operations. He said the strikes began with a Washington's ultimatum for an complete Tehran capitulation and ended with an absolute demand for a halt to hostilities.

Iran is certain the first strikes by Israel were mounted with complete American awareness and coordination, making trust difficult to restore.

Negotiations Remains the Final Resolution

The foreign minister stated: "Tehran was not the one that had deserted diplomacy; it was the United States and the western countries that had always tried to impose their demands during the discussions. Negotiations can still be active and continues the primary resolution to settle conflicts, but its criteria, guidelines and principles must be followed."

"Provided that they talk to the Iranian people with the language of dignity and respect, they will get a reply in the same language."

Repair and Rebuilding

In what is characterized by Iran's diplomats as the conflict of repair and reconstruction, the foreign minister stated he was certain Iran's defence capabilities "are much stronger than prior to 13 or 14 June of this year. All our capabilities have been reestablished. We gained numerous insights from this engagement; we have come to know our internal vulnerabilities and the weaknesses of the opponent."

He stated: "We successfully passed this war. Our enrichment knowledge, which they aimed to eliminate, continues to exist. The facilities and equipment, if damaged, will be restored; what is important is the resolve of the Iranian people and then the national cohesion that they aimed at, but did not succeed to destroy. The citizens of Tehran have become more powerful, more united, and more backing of the leadership and the country in the wake of this assault."
