Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
